Marilyn and Anthony started Hee Haw Donkeys in 2004 after Marilyn helped a friend with her beach donkeys. She instantly fell in love with the donkeys and within a few months had bought the business operating on Scarborough's south bay. Shortly afterwards, Anthony, a senior criminal barrister, took an early retirement to help his wife with this new and very demanding business. Between them they had 50 years of experience with horses and found this invaluable in learning all about donkeys. Indeed they still keep their horses with the donkeys.

In 2006 Hee Haw Donkeys moved to North Scotland where the family owned a smallholding. In Scotland they had the pleasure (and novelty) of doing children's rides at most of the Highland Games and Gatherings, as well as shows, galas and other events across the North of Scotland. In 2009 they moved back to the family home in North Yorkshire and brought all of the donkeys back with them. They were then offered the chance of the beach concession on Scarborough's north bay Blue Flag beach. Since then the business has prospered and the demand for the donkeys to attend events has rapidly increased and as a result, in 2013 they moved to Wetwang on the Yorkshire Wolds and set up a second base near Pocklington. Living midway between the 2 bases means all of the donkeys are looked after personally and on a daily basis and provides better and quicker access to all areas of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Teesside.
